march madness

as elliot's first birthday draws near, i find nostalgia in the oddest things. for instance, as soon as the ncaa basketball tournament tv promos started, i felt a vivid reminder of many hours in labor & delivery, fighting through increasingly difficult contractions with the tournament on in the background. and let me tell you, those commercials have stirred some pretty intense emotions and visceral memories.

and it's not just the basketball tournament (which i LOVE!): i remember a fun st patrick's day dinner spent with friends - watching everyone else chug green beer and feeling my little bug stretching and squirming in my tummy; trying to focus in meetings - while also trying to hide the crazy dance party going on in my tummy; wanting to sleep on my stomach so badly i could practically taste it! and with each completed annual project and new springtime blossom, i find myself continually drawn back to those last few days before elliot became my baby bug.

it's so strange to think of a time when she wasn't part of our daily lives - when we could just run to the store without having to think about naptime, sleep in until WHENEVER WE WANTED, perform basic household chores without having to contend with an energetic & curious baby....or stay late at work, without any worry about dinner, bathtime, bedtime, etc. Because we have never been the kind of people who lived a raucous lifestyle, i didn't realize how much our lives would shift. i mean, i knew they would change - i just had no idea how different and how much better things could possibly be.

want to see something crazy? this is what i looked like one year ago today:

as my husband lovingly put it, i was "waaay bigger" than either of us expected, feeling pretty darned ready to pop - with no idea that, in less than two short weeks, my life would be forever changed, improved, enhanced, blessed and so many other adjectives that can't even begin to express the joy that came into my heart after a handful of intense hours in march: when i became a mama.
